Track and Field Athletics (track-based running, plus field events involving jumping and throwing) is an important part of what we do at Durham City Harriers. Many of our members, from all age groups, compete in the following leagues:
North East Development Leagues
The North East Development Leagues promote track and field athletics fixtures for junior and senior athletes. The North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) is for junior athletes between the ages of 8-17 years. The North East Senior Development League (NESDL) is for athletes 18 years and over. The season (April to July) for each league comprises four fixtures held at various stadiums throughout the North-East.
Participation is open to everyone, regardless of ability. It’s a chance to compete in events in which you don’t normally specialise. Track events include sprints, middle distance running and hurdling while field events include javelin, long jump, high jump and hammer.
You can enter multiple events so it’s a great opportunity to try disciplines you’ve never done before. With the club covering the cost of entry, there’s no reason for not having a go at what is always a fun, inclusive sports occasion. Every athlete scores points for the team so the more athletes we have taking part, the more likely the club is to do well.
If you’d like to get involved, contact Helen Kleiser (juniors) and Cian Rynne (seniors) via Spond.
North East Masters Athletics Association (NEMAA)
NEMAA is a track and field league for athletes aged 35 and over. Six mid-week fixtures are held over the spring and summer months at stadiums around the North East. It’s an opportunity for veteran athletes to compete amongst themselves in a variety of track and field events.
Anyone interested, should register independently via the NEMAA website. You can expect a cracking night at the track in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. Races are graded according to your predicted time so you’ll only ever be running with athletes of a similar pace.
