Durham City Harriers holds an annual members-only track event called the “Mackay Mile”. Usually held in May, it’s a one-mile race for Seniors, U17s and U15s, and an 800m race for U13s. The event celebrates the contribution to the club of three individuals: Brian Mackay, Andy Billett and John Hampson.
Bryan was a founder member of DCH when it reformed in 1972. As part of the partnership with Durham University – following the club’s move to Maiden Castle – he coached both DCH and DUAXC athletes in middle and long distance running for just over 20 years before hanging up his whistle in 2022.
Two memorial trophies, the Andy Billett Memorial Trophy and John Hampson Memorial Trophy celebrate the contribution made to the senior and junior sections of DCH by coaches Andy Billett and John Hampson both of whom have sadly passed away.
