Durham City veteran athletes have claimed the North East all-time record (subject to verification), for the 4 x 400m relay for the V45 category of runners, aged 45 or above, they added the 4 x 400m record to the 4 x 100m North East record for the same age group, which they won last year.
The men’s team (pictured left to right) of Paul Donaghy and Derek McGirl (both V50 runners), Alastair McCall (V55) and Jason Catterall (V45) teamed up in the final event of the North East Masters Athletic Association (NEMAA) summer league, held at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Recording a time of 4:16.7, they took more than 16 seconds off the previous North East record (4:33.3) as they swept to victory, returning the fastest time of the night of any age group.
They repeated their success in the men’s 4 x 100m event, their time of 53.9secs beating all other teams on the night, but narrowly missing their own North East regional record for the V45 age group of 53.6secs, set at the same meeting last year. Over the shorter distance, Conrad Kennedy (V50) ran in place of Derek McGirl.

Durham were well under strength again in the Women’s Team with only 3 competitors to support the Men, as it is a combined team event, even so despite their tremendous efforts they only finished 5th team with 231 points.
