An overview of club training sessions is provided below. Our main sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday at the Maiden Castle Sports Centre. All groups meet by the shelters next to the track at the rear of the Centre from 18.30. The Senior Endurance training group start at ~18.45, with the Junior Grass and Middle-Long Distance groups starting at 7pm. Please contact the relevant coaches for more details regarding upcoming sessions.

Junior Grass Training Sessions
OVERVIEW: The grass training sessions are designed for juniors (although seniors are welcome) and take place all year round at Maiden Castle. During the winter months the sessions are held on the grass area between the all weather sports pitches and the main road, it’s ideal for cross country training. As the winter sets in, spikes and trail shoes are more appropriate for the underfoot conditions. During the summer, the sessions take place over the river, usually at the far end of the sports ground near the Rugby pitches. Ordinary training shoes are ideal.
TYPES OF SESSION: The sessions are varied, and as well as being enjoyable they are, like all serious training, aimed at improving the runners performance. Typical sessions include: Fast starts; Relays: steady state running: Fartlek: Pyramid: Handicaps: Long and short sprints.
SESSION DAYS AND TIMES: Tuesday and Thursday, Summer and Winter at 7pm. Prompt. Runners are advised to turn up 15 to 20 minutes before the session starts to warm up and to familiarise themselves with the course layout and to listen to the pre-session brief. The sessions usually last 40 minutes on Tuesday, and 30 minutes on Thursday, depending on competition commitments.
All sessions are followed by a group warm down.
Saturday Morning Hill Sessions
Hill sessions take place all year round, but not usually on weekends when there is competition. The benefits of hill sessions are that they develop leg strength, core strength and mental strength; through strength comes speed. The group meets at Freeman’s Quay swimming pool, Durham, on Saturday mornings at 9.30 prompt, to start the session at 9.45.
Sunday Long Run
A group of runners meet for a long Sunday run. Usually 1hr 30mins exploring footpaths and other nice environments. Racers not allowed to this session! Meet at the end of the Milburngate Bridge by the entrance to the passport office at 9am.
Strength & Conditioning Sessions
The Club has an established strength and conditioning programme, in association with the University, that seeks to support athletes’ development at all levels.
Circuit Training: Wednesdays 7.45-8.30 pm
Intended for those athletes requiring general strength and conditioning work or as a supplementary session to athletes in a specific S&C programme. ‘Circuit Sessions’ and are led by a Durham University strength and conditioning coach and take place in Section C of the main Sports Hall at Maiden Castle. These weekly sessions are open to all DCH club members free of charge (with the exception of the Mini’s group as this type of training is not appropriate for them). Also any u15 / u13 athletes who wish to attend the circuit sessions are required to check with their coach that the sessions are appropriate for them at their stage of athletic development.
Specific Weights/Lifting Sessions: Various
Progression to these sessions is subject to strict criteria set out by the Club. Athletes interested in taking part should speak with their coach in the first instance. Final judgement of athlete suitability lies in all cases with the S&C coach.
Please wear appropriate sports clothing for mixed age and gender group work. Clean training shoes are required in the gym.
