DURHAM SUMMER XC RELAYS 2009: HOSTING TEAM FINISHED WELL IN XC RELAYS
Durham Summer Cross Country Relays 2009 The annual Summer Relays took place on the evening of Wed 26th August at Maiden Castle. Persistent rain during the day didn't deter athletes with 28 senior and veteran teams and 6 young athlete teams taking part. The senior relay consisted of 3 legs each approximately 3km. The young athletes relay comprised 3 legs each of approximately 1500m.
Tommy Brannon, Terry West and Iain Twaddle of North Shields Poly were first team home in a time of 29.31 in the Senior and Veteran relay and took the men's veteran team prize. Sunderland Harriers, also competing in the veteran men's category were 2nd. Josh McEnaney, Michael Small and Lee Millmore of Birtley AC were 3rd team home in 31.08 and won the senior men's team prize. Fastest leg among the men was Brian Rushworth who completed the course in 9.25. Among the women, Melissa Turner, Angela Hunter and Claire Simpson of Chester le Street were first senior team finishing in a time of 33.01. Elvet Striders - Liz Lamb, Jan Young and Roz Layton - took the Veteran Women's team prize in a time of 41.56. Melissa Turner of Chester le Street ran the fastest women's leg in 10.23.
In the young athletes relay, Birtley AC finished first in both the Boys and Girls competitions. Lydia Turner, Rachel Ward and Sophie Taylor finished in 17.33 to win the girls' prize. Daniel Turner, Charlie Pratt and Adrian Bailes completed the course in 16.25 to win the boys' prize. Fatest girls' leg was Lydia Turner of Birtley in 5.25 and fastest boys' leg was Daniel Turner of Birtley in 5.18.
The course was amended slightly from previous years so all winning performances are new course records
