
Morpeth Harriers and North Shields Poly between them carried off the major honours at the 2012 Durham Cathedral Relays, staged on Sun 22nd January around the Racecourse Sports Fields in Durham.
In a thrilling last lap chase, Morpeth Harriers Matt Nicholson passed New Marske Harriers' Mark Shaw in the closing 200m to take first place in the Senior Men's Relay in a time of 26.58. Alongside Nicholson, Lewis Timmins and Ross Floyd completed the winniing Morpeth team. Fastest senior men's leg was run by Durham City Harriers' Dan Garbutt in 8.46. Morpeth Harriers also won the Senior Women's relay with Ashley Gibson, Jane Hodgson and Sarah Wilkinson finishing in 32.10, over two and a half minutes ahead of Morpeth 'B' in 2nd place. Ashley Gibson of Morpeth Harriers posted the fastest senior women's leg in a time of 10.32. Durham University, who crossed the line in 2nd place were disqualified for not wearing club colours.
In the veterans' relays, Tynedale Harriers won the women's race and North Shields Poly took the honours in the men's race. In the women's relay, Kirsty Anderson, Karen Robertson and Steph Scott of Tynedale crossed the line first in a time of 36.24. Fastest veteran women's leg was run by Alison Dargie of Elswick Harriers in 11.20. First home in the veteran mens' relay were Tommy Brannon, Terry West and Iain Twaddle of North Shields Poly in a time of 30.33. Fastest veteran mens' leg was run by Iain Twaddle in 9.39.
