English Schools Championships
At the English schools championships at Birmingham on 9th/10th July, Sophie Wood improved her best time for 400 metres hurdles by 2 seconds to 64.32 and narrowly missed qualifying for the final. This was despite injury preventing her from doing any hurdling until 4 weeks before the event.
Also at the English schools, in her 1st year of running 300 metre hurdles, Georgia Whitfied improved her personal best to 44.8 to qualify for the final of the intermediate girls event. In the final, she improved her best again to 44.00 to finish in an excellent 4th place. This performance meant that she was selected as a reserve for the home countries international event in Glasgow.
English Senior Track & Field Championships 17th/18th July
At the English Senior Track & Field Championships at Gateshead on 17th/18th July, Samantha Coleby improved her personal best to 60.81 to qualify for the final of the womens 400metre hurdles. In windy conditions she managed again to improve her best time to 60.50 to finish in 5th position.The following weekend at the Birmingham Games, she improved again to 60.10 in the heats. In the final she ran another personal best to break the 60 second barrier for the first time, finishing 2nd in 59.56. This time ranks her 11th in the UK senior rankings and she is still only 19.
Liam Ayton gave an excellent performance in the Inter boys 800 metres with a time of 1 minute 58.93 seconds to qualify for the Semi-finals. In those semi- finals Liam just missed out on qualification for the final, a good effort in his first English Schools Championship.

John Gurney
It is with much sadness that we have to report the death of John Gurney, who would be known to many in the club as past president and chairman, official and a person who encouraged participation in athletics in all its forms. John was instrumental in the development of the club and later successes have much to do with the foundation work John did with his sound governance and advice. John's funeral will take place on Wednesday 14th July at 10.30 a.m. at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham.

Meeting for Senior/Vets Road and Cross-Country Runners
A meeting has been arranged for all senior/vet road and cross-country runners to be held at the Salutation pub, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, on Monday 12th July at 7.30pm. The aim of the meeting will be to consider ways of developing further this section of the club in the coming year. Please come along and give your views and opinions and help shape the future of this section of the club. A good turn out would be great.
The meeting should be over by 9pm so if any other senior members would like to drop in then for a drink then please do. We have a room booked all evening. If you want any other further info then please contact Gary Coulter (membership secretary) through the website.
There are a couple of events coming up where volunteer helpers are needed. Please let me know if you are able to help with either of the events below by replying to this e-mail. Monday 28th June, County Durham Athletics Network Summer Athletics Festival - a "Quadkids" format event where all under 15 athletes (under 15 years on 31st August 2009), under 13 athletes (u13 on 31/08/09) and under 11 athletes (8 years of age up to u11 on 31/08/09) belonging to Chester-le-St, Derwentside, Durham CH or Sedgefield Harriers are invited to compete in four events - a sprint, 600 or 800m, a howler throw and a long jump. Volunteers are needed to:
- help set up the track from 4.30pm
- greet visitors in the car park and register competitors from 5.45pm
- help record results and get results from the event stations back to the results desk from 6.30pm.
The first event will start at 6.30pm and competition will finish latest 8pm when there will be a presentation of a trophy. Meet on or around the track area at Graham Sports Centre.
Wednesday 14th July, North East Athletics League at Gateshead International Stadium - two club members are required to help register athletes from 18.00 (arrive 17.45) along with volunteers from Shildon and Elswick. Go to reception at the Stadium and they will direct you to competitor registration. Please let me know if you are able to help, so that I can ensure we provide two helpers. If we provide helpers the Club gets its entry fee refunded so you will also be helping the club's finances.
Two further club events aimed at all members are: Monday 12th July, Salutation pub in Framwellgate Moor (function room), 7.30pm-9.00pm, an informal gathering to consider ways of developing the senior and veteran road and cross-country sections of the club. All interested members are welcome to attend and the meeting will be followed by a social.
Monday 19th July, Antioch House, 66 Crossgate, Durham (half way up the cobbled street betwen the Fighting Cocks pub and the Elm Tree/Angel pubs on the right hand side going up the hill), 7.00pm-9.00pm, Durham City Harriers Volunteering Evening. This is an informal event where club members and parents/carers/guardians of young athletes can come along to find out about opportunities to volunteer to help with the running of the club. Both young and old, junior and senior club members are welcome. There are many ways in which people can help, including coaching, officiating, helping with club administration and helping to run club events. Tea and coffee will be served. Anybody who is able to help serve tea/coffee and welcome guests, please let me know.
Northern League Athletics Meeting 5th June 2010
Durham City Harriers finished 3rd in the recent Northern League competition at Monkton stadium Jarrow, just behind Gateshead and Middlesbrough with a total of 317 points

2010 London Marathon
Ian Crampton was 60th overall and FIRST V 0/45 in the 2010 London Marathon in a fantastic time of 2 hours 30 minutes 2 seconds

North East Track & Field Championships May 8th / 9th 2010
At the 2010 North East Track and Field Championship (May 8/9) our club members had excellent results and between them won 20 medals with 6 athletes becoming County Champions, 3 of whom became Double County Champions.
Vanessa Jacques won Gold in both the u17 women's Javelin and Shot Putt. Silver in Discus.
Georgia Whitfield won Gold in both the u17 women's Long Jump and the 300 metre Hurdles
Rebekah Wilmshurst won Gold in both the Senior Women's 100 and 200 metres,
Michael Grimes won Gold in the u20 men's 5000 metres and Silver in the 2000 metre Steeplechase.
Liam Ayton won Gold in the u17 men's 1500 steeplechase and Silver in the 1500 metres.
Shaun Moralee won Gold in the senior men's 5000 metres and Silver in the 800 metres.
Chloe Price won Silver u17 women's 800 metres and Bronze in the 300 metres.
Emma Toogood won Silver in the u20 women's 1500 metres and Bronze in the 800 metres.
Lucy McIlroy won Silver in the u13 girls 100 metres.
Samantha Coleby Silver in the senior women's 400 metre Hurdles.
Rob Hand won Bronze in the senior men's10000 metres.
Leeds Track & Field League Match 1st May 2010
At the first Senior Track and Field Match of the 2010 season held at Leeds on 1st May, the club finished 3rd in a very closely fought contest. This was an excellent team performance.

Cyril Elliot Open Meeting Sunday 11th April 2010
At the Cyril Elliot Open Meeting held at Middlesbrough on Sunday 11th April five of our athletes competed and produced excellent performances.
Rebekah Wilmshurst won the u20/senior Women's 100 metres in a time of 12.79 seconds.
Emma Toogood dominated the u20/senior Women's 800, by kicking away from her competitors at 400 to go. She was able to win comfortably, easing down, but still ran 2 .21.34.
In her first race for the club Frankie Gibson was 2nd in the u15 Girls 100 in a time of 13.53 whilst Lucy McIlroy in her first outdoor event was 2nd in both the u13 75 metres and 150 metres in times of 10.97 and 20.86 respectively.
Chloe Price finshed 2nd in the u17 Womem's 800 metres in a personal best time of 2.19.86 and the went on to finish 2nd in the 300 metres in a time of 44.07
Inter-County Schools XC 2010
Taking place on the 7th of February, four athletes from the club had some very good races. Michael Grimes finished a very credible 2nd in the senior boys 7K race in a time of 23.17. Liam Ayton finishing 5th in the Inter-boys 5.2K race whilst Emma Toogood also finishing in 5th place in the 4.3K with a time of 19.00, Chloe Price finished 6th in the Inter-girls 3.9K race in 16.54. These efforts will qualify the runners to compete in the English Schools XC Championships later this year.
North East Counties & Road Relay Championships (Hetton Lyons Country Park, Hetton-Le-Hole) 6th March 2010 Durham City Harriers, although not at full strength won surprise medals on this new course over 2 laps covering 2.2 miles. Shaun Moralee back in Durham City Harriers colours gave the six man team a great start coming back first on leg 1 in a time of 10.36 which was the joint fastest time of the day, Graham hunt then took over and held the lead until Morpeth then Gateshead overtook Durham dropping to 3rd. Michael Grimes on leg 3 powered his way round to reduce the gap, recording a time of 10.54 which was the 6th fastest of the day. Liam Ayton took 4th leg and maintained 3rd place recording 11.40 which gave a solid performance veteran Ted Tate on leg 5 tried to hang on in there, but dropped place all credit to him recording a time of 12.51 handing over to James Dowdle on 6th leg, who began in hot pursuit, encouraged by him team mates around the course, James eventually overtook New Marske on lap 2, to get the city team into medal contention and pressed on to the finish giving Durham an excellent bronze medal behind the more experienced teams of Gateshead Harriers who retained the title, and Morpeth Harriers who secured silver. James recorded a time of 12.15.
Intercounties XC at Coften Park, Birmingham 13th March 2010
Rosie Smith, newly crowned North East Cross Country Senior Womens champion travelled down to Birmingham to compete for North East Counties and finished a highly respectable 18th place out of 265 finishers recording 29.04. Rosie finished 2nd counter for North East who had six athletes in the first 40 to secure the team gold medals.
In the under 20 mens team, over the same distance, on form Michael Grimes had a very good run in his new age group finishing 33rd in 27.04, first counter for the North East team. Chloe Price also had a good run in the under 15 girls team, finishing 86th out of 297 finishers recording 16.54 for the 4K course.
English Schools XC, Heaton Park, Manchester 20th March 2010
5 Members of Durham City Harriers Qualified in the early rounds to compete against the best in the country, 4 athletes representing Durham and 1 athlete representing Suffolk. Over 2000 athletes took part from 45 English counties on a muddy, rainsoaked, gruelling course. once again, Michael Grimes had an astonishing run in the senior boys race finishing 31st in a time of 24.53, and was first counter from Durham and only 80 seconds behind the winner, out of a field of 304 finishers. Emma Toogood also had a very good run in the senior girls race finishing a highly placed 68th out of 277 finishers in a time of 17.19, 30 places better than the previous year. Liam Ayton who has had an equally strong winter season, also ran well but suffered in the later stages due to a tight calf. but still finished 121st out of 324 finishers in a time of 20.59 in the intermediate boys race. Chloe Price also performed well in the intermediate girls race finishing 141st out of 334 finishers, in a time of 15.21. In the senior girls race, young Georgia Tindale qualified via her school in Suffolk and therefore represented them finishing 177th in a time of 11.27 out of 339 finishers.
Another North Eastern Title for Georgia
Georgia Whitfield produced no fewer than 4 personal bests to win the North Eastern under 17 pentathlon title. This was her first ever attempt at combined events and her win adds to her gold medal in the long jump earlier this year. Her performances of 9.81secs for 60m hurdles, 7.78m shot putt, 1.42m high jump, 4.75 long jump and 8.24secs for 60m gave her a total of 2935 points.

North East Indoor Championship 2010
In additon to the two DCH&AC athletes ( Georgina Whitfield and Rebecca Butler) who won Gold Medals respectively in the under 17 Long Jump (5.11 metres) and Shot Putt (9.08), as previously reported, DCH&AC athletes achieved the following performances at the championships.
Lucy McIlroy in her first race for the club took the Bronze Medal in the Under 13 60metres in a time of 8.90.
Teresa Cox continued to show her all round ability by coming 6th in the U13 High Jump (1.30) and 5th in the heat of the 60 hurdles in 11.24.
Paul Donaghy finished third in the B final of the Senior Men's 60 metres in a time of 7.69.
Northern Athletics Indoor Championship 2010 at Sheffield
Emma Toogood was 2nd in the U20 1500 metres in a time of 5.01.95 and 4th in the 800 metres in 2.22.14.
Rebecca Butler was 5th in the U17 Shot Putt with 9.24 metres.
Georgina Whitfield was 6th in the U17 Long Jump with 5.00 metres and ran 43.75 seconds in a heat of the 300 metres.
