There are races from U11s to Vets for both Male and Female runners.
I have attached the entry form for all age groups and request team captains to organise and enter there own relevant teams/runners.
I will put a list up on the notice board for senior and vets if you wish to run.
Please note the closing date of 6 Sept and that each runner will be required to pay for their run as the Club do not support this event.

For those of you who were at the club on Thursday night and those who were not it has beocome clear that if we are to compete in the Harrier League this season we need a captain. Although I am comitted to continuing the role of Road Captain this season I am also prepared to take on the XC Captancy as well. Andy is going to send me the 2010 entry forms when available and I will be sending details to all members via this forum. It is noted that we curently do not have a notice board at MC and therefore we need to ensure that everyone who wants to sign up will be given the opportunity. However, I see no reason why all DCH Sen and Vets should not sign up. Hope to discuss this issue further at our meeting on the 12th with those members who attend.

Sedgefield Harriers are keen to organise a Network (Ch-le-St vs Derwentside vs DCH vs Sedgefield) 5k and 3k competition in a midweek Wed in August. They would like to know if there is any interest. Events would be sen/vet mens 5k, sen/vet womens 5k, u17 men's 3k and u17 women's 3k. Aim is to encourage road/cross country runners onto the track to try it out in a fun competition. There would be an overall team competition between clubs with points for each event.

Any interest?

Well we stayed up by 3 points, but only because it is 5 penalty points now and not 10, as before, for not fielding a team.
There were THREE of us who made the trip up the hill to Prudhoe, which is disappointing for a club of our size..
We have struggled to field a team at all the events this season:- 10 at Sunderland, 7 at Town Moor, 6 at both Wrekenton and South Shields.
Why? I'm not sure, but we seem to have plenty of athletes training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Perhaps they just don't like mud and cold.
Anyway, after long deliberation I think the club needs a new and younger cross country captain with fresh ideas, so have decided that this is my last season.
I have enjoyed the 12 years leading the DCH team to its promotion to division 1 and also running Sunderland close in Division 1 a few seasons ago.
I wish whoever takes over all the best and I will still be plodging through the clarts at the various events during the NEHL season

 WELL DESERVED CONGRATULATIONS TED
For the second year running our stallwart cross country runner TED TAIT has won the annual Resurgent Trophy 2009/10, awarded to the best cross country runner at Durham City Harriers.
This trophy was instituted 10 years ago to encourage Durham City Harriers to participate in the cross country harrier league by awarding points at each of the six events. The trophy itself was made by Bill McNeill, a member of our club and former Chairman, from elm, and is in the form of a rose bowl.
It is, I believe, one of the hardest trophies to win, as it needs consistency, determination, ability and all of these over six months of the worst that the British weather can throw at us.
Points are awarded for running (25), being a counter for the team (10), being fastest from their pack (10), moving up a pack.
Congratulations to all those who have held this prestigious trophy over the last ten years and especially to Ted in my last year as cross country captain.

A lovely day weatherwise, which was just as well seeing as the club tent was left in my garage. It WILL be there next time as I am going to tie my neck in a knot .:S

There were some very good runs on a sticky course, especially Ted who ran himself back into the medium pack.
Our team results were very disappointing, as 7th in the Men Div 2 leaves us with another possible battle against relegatiion looming.
Many thanks to all the senior men who did turn out.

As there were only 2 DCH senior women they failed to complete a team. Very sad, as Debbie was our fastest runner in a great time, ably supported by Gemma, who finished like a train, having her best xc run so far.

Where can we find more senior men and at least one more senior woman runner?

Just noticed that Elvet Striders had 21 men and 16 women running. If they can do it..................................................................

There were two representatives from the club at the NEHL AGM at Gateshead last night (Monday 7th) and the entry forms for this season should be appearing on the notice board at Maiden Castle in the next few days. Please note that we only have until 2nd October, a little over 3 weeks, to submit the entries, so if you are considering racing in any (and preferably as many as possible) of the Harrier League races this season, please sign up as soon as possible.

If you are unable to get to Maiden Castle in the next couple of weeks but would still like to register, please contact your XC Captain Alan Rowell (a.k.a. The Clartyman) and he'll make sure you are on the list.

Don't forget that the Senior Men were relegated to Division 2 at the end of last season, and our target for this year is to bounce straight back to Division 1. To do this we need all hands on deck (and i don't just mean Rob and his family). While there are a core of members who turn out regularly, it is just as valuable for the club to have runners who can turn out for only one or two races: it is definitely a case of 'safety in numbers' / 'the more the merrier' etc etc., so even if there is only a slim chance of you competing, please sign up anyway.

A fixture list will be available in the next few days in the newsletter, but it all starts with the Sherman Cup event on 24th October.

Temple Park, South Shields

Sadly I will be unable to run or even spectate, as I am completely laid up with a trapped nerve in back. Struggling to walk to the bottom of our garden at moment. Really annoyed as it is the 100th year of Harrier League and a very special occasion..
While you are all galloping around I will be on a table being wrenched in all directions. Ouch!
Hoping we have lots of runners and survive in division 1. I will be there in spirit.
I post directions, Enjoy!

Directions
Take A1(M) north past Birtley Services and then fork right along A194(M). At White Mare Pool, at the end of the motorway, continue under the flyover and go straight on following signs to South Shields.

Pass a small roundabout, go under a railway bridge and then under a flyover (Tyne Tunnel Road). After a pedestrian bridge over the road, take second exit at large roundabout with lights.

Continue along John Reid Road until you see, first, a Fire Station and then the Sports Centre on the right. Go on to roundabout and return along the way you came for a hundred metres, on the other side of the dual carriageway and, finally, up the slip road to Temple Park Sports Centre.

The venue
Charge for parking . Is possible to park at other side of roundabout, towards The Nook, for free.

Full changing facilities in Sports Centre.

Walk to start by turning right from Sports Centre entrance and along a tarmac path. Continue over a grassy hill to find the start and finish area.

The course
Actual start is across a football field. Three laps of a course which is generally level but with a few steep climbs and long drags. Includes a water jump and, often, a long muddy section.

If you enjoy running in snow, slush, ice, mud, ice covered puddles or a mixture of all these then this was the course for you.
Wrekenton is always a testing XC course at the best of times, but the Valentine's Day run had the lot and proved a worthy challenge.
Our tent was put to good use as 13 DCH Men and 3 DCH women prepared for the fray.
SENIOR MEN
We were led home by Sam Billmore, his first XC for us, and an excellent 9th place. Andy Biggs and Bob Lindsay also had a good battle and finished 28th and 29th, so it is the medium pack for all three next time. Kevin Knight made his debut for the club in the harrier league, finishing a very creditable 43rd place and will surely be pushing for the medium pack next time. Ted Tate and Rob Hand made up our counters.
Ian Crampton, Dave Masterman,Steve Marshall, Alan Rowell, Geoff Watson, Les Phillips and Brian Brown made up our team.
We finished FOURTH team on the day. WELL DONE TO ALL.

Attached are full results listings.

Thanks to all DCH members who came along this morning, either to help out or to compete. Although I started the morning by scraping snow off the car, by 9am the sun was shining and people were smiling. I was also introduced to Sophie, one of our youngest Club members (by family connection) at one month! By 12.15 there had been some good competitive cross country racing out on the sports fields and by 12.50 (just) there was a complete results listing and a prize presentation. Fastest women's leg of the day was posted by Alyson Dixon of Chester le Street at 10m17s and the fastest men's leg was a dead heat between M Hood and Patrick Martin of Sunderland Harriers who both recorded legs of 8m49s. Fastest among the vets were Brian Rushworth (Sunderland Harriers, VM45) at 9.19 and Gwenda Cavill (Morpeth Harriers, VW45) at 12.10. Is there something biological going on whereby veteran athletes peak at 45 years of age? The senior races were won by Sunderland Harriers in the men's race and Chester le Street in the women's. Morpeth Harriers were first vet women's team and North Shields Poly first vet men's team.

Congrats to Alan, Mac and Elwyn who were 3rd team home in the VM55-64 category and to Alan for posting fastest leg in a complete veteran team in the VM60 category. And thank you to everyone who helped to make the event run smoothly.

After a hard fought cross country season Ted Tait eventually emerges triumphant, again. This year he was pushed to the limit by several runners eager to get their hands on the trophy.
Geoff Watson was first to take up the challenge, but then made the fatal mistake of running a 'blinder' at Sunderland and finishing in the top 30 so moving up a pack- goose cooked.
Next to take up the baton was Andy Biggs and he certainly pushed Ted hard, but moving up to the medium pack was just that little bit too much of a handicap. However, he has had a magnificent XC season and I hope the strength he has gained will make his upcoming London Marathon all he wishes it to be.
Rob, running from the fast pack and missing the first event (skiing, I believe) finished second and he too pushed Ted to the end.
There were 4 100%ers this season, namely Brian Brown (also stand in for me with the tent - thanks), Andy Biggs, Geoff Watson and of cousre Ted Tait.
Well done again Ted - how many times is that now?

Cold and icy, but the new tent arrived in time for ELEVEN DCH men, FOUR women plus 3 four supporters and a dog to shelter from the elements.
Not surprisingly the ground was hard and frosty, although this was much better (in my opinion) than the usual quagmire at Farringdon.
The Senior Men race was the expected mass stampede at the start,as the large turnout jostled for position on the first of 3 laps. Overtaking proved very difficult as runners tried to keep their feet, but there were no casualties among our team this time.
An excellent run by Geoff Watson moving up to the medium pack, and a welcome back to Gary Coulter, after a long absence from the cross country scene.

We were 6th team.>:D<

Good turnout by everyone, 14 Senior Men, 1 U/17 Man, 2 U/20 Women and 2 Senior Women, on what started out as a grotty day weather wise is very pleasing.
The course was not as bad as I feared and the one hill instead of the three on each lap as in previous years was a bonus.
Pity about our tent, I shall have words with the culprits.
We WILL have a new tent for the next event, in fact I am researching it now on the internet.:)

WELL DONE EVERYONE.

P.S. Of course Sunderland had to go and spoil my day didn't they. Things never change.
