I am sure everyone will be extremely sad to hear the news about John Gurney. He had been ill for some time and sadly died earlier this week.
When I first joined DCH John was always one of the first runners to offer help and encouragement. Of course I could not hope to compete with his exploits.... marathons, ultra distance runs, for example London to Brighton (on foot not in a veteran car) and many local runs too.

Eventually John hung up his running shoes, but did not leave athletics,as he devoted considerable amounts of his time to officiating and was a well respected member of many committees. He also became DCH club chairman and was one of our first life members and club President.

Many of you may think you don't know John, but you will have seen him numerous times. He was one of that dedicated band who would stand at the finish of races recording times, or more often he would be at Harrier League events in his waterproofs and wellies through rain, snow and every kind of weather that the north east is capable of delivering. I have often been struggling around a clarty harrier league course and feeling really sorry for myself only to hear,'Come on Alan, keep it going.' There was John, soaking wet, with clipboard in hand , smiling out from under his hood.

John will be greatly missed by me, all of his friends at DCH and all in running circles in the North East. Most of all, however, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Many, many thanks to everyone, past and present, who kindly donated towards the purchase of trophies to remember Bill Ramage.
£185 was raised, a splendid sum.
We are sure that Bill would have been astounded, but very pleased, that so many people have remembered and appreciated the time he freely gave towards the club and many Durham City Harriers.
The trophies, suitably engraved, will be presented to the fastest Durham City Harrier male and female runner at the Cathedral Relays, held in January. They will be held for one year.

Thank-you again.
