It was good to see a good clumb of orange vests at the Wentworth Leisure Centre beforehand -

1st Darren Purvis (Birtley) - 54.02

7th Graham Hunt - 57.14
65th Richard Asquith - 1.07.29
69th Rob Garbutt - 1.08.00
89th David King - 1.09.50
97th Olivia Tindale - 1.10.34
134th Chris Herkes - 1.13.32
136th Simon Hackett - 1.13.38
137th Gary Coulter - 1.13.38
158th Anna Seeley - 1.14.52
197th Craig Herkes - 1.17.00
258th Kelly Zaremba - 1.21.47

529 Melanie Richardson - 2.04.40

5th in the Women's Teams - Durham City (Olivia, Anna and Kelly)

for some reason Simon isn't on the results list I have seen but he definitley came in with or close to Gary.
Alan Rowell picked up an injury about 6 miles I think and again he isn't in the results list but he was definitley at the end.

www.race-results.co.uk/results/2010/tynedale10.pdf

All in all very quick times. There always seemed to be an orange vest along the road somewhere to focus on.
I was aiming to be under 1.20 and would've liked 1.15 so I was chuffed to find out I had a 1.13 in me. It is a good course but I now know what they mean when they say undulating, if you're not going up then you're going down!
A little bit of sunshine for the first 3 miles and a bit of a head wind at times but nothing that caused too much of a nuisance. And pretty impressive refreshments at the end as well.

Well done all

Summarised below.
Positions are across the line and not the chip time position
though the times are the chip time.
171 42:45 Gary Coulter (V55) - 6TH V55
178 42:47 Clare Manser
224 44:11 Elwyn Baldwin (V60) - 4th V60
242 44:20 Ian Marshall (V45)
409 48:51 Peter Chapman
475 50:26 Diane Wood (v45 Ladies) - 8TH Ladies V45
618 53:51 Joseph Harker (V70) - 4th V70

I enjoyed it, I think. A PB for me (25 seconds) which I was personally happy with, but there were some seriously good performances from many others. Good to see Elwyn and Ian Marshall back racing and unlucky to Graham who loses his club championship by posting a better time than last year!

50 miles of rocks, bogs, streams with 9658ft ascent with a 24hr cut off time. Should have really made time to recce this as running in the clag with a headtorch while map reading isn't the easiest task in the world. Fantastically organised event with great atmosphere and what would have been wonderful scenery if the weather had just been a little kinder to us.
Managed to get lost with 1/2 mile to go, as the clag had come down properly, and took 40 mins to get back on track so think I need to give it another go next year to put it right. Anyone who is looking for a real challenge of endurance should consider this.

Very small field for this scenic trail race overlooked by The Angel Of The North, probably caused by many running the popular Tynedale 10k or Croft 10K the night before.
Anyway, 2 DCH made it to the start on a lovely summer evening. As is the case in trail races there was a fast and furious rush as everyone jockeyed for position. A well organised run with runners water bottle for everyone as well as buffet afterwards.
Very pleasant night, reasonably warm, but quite well sheltered from the high winds that were prevalent elsewhere. Great result for Ian coming 4th overall and 1st V45. Good to see Ian Hesler get a race in and a good time as well. Another excellent improvement from Rob with a 10k PB - well done. Olivia ran well coming in 6th female.
A course PB for me (4th year I've ran it) but not a 10k PB. Hopefully that will come next time in Darlington. Quite a few DCH running which is good also. Rushed the pie and pies down my neck to get back for the match!

It's listed as one of the toughest half marathons around and lived up to its reputation. The many hills were just as steep and there always seemed to be more ups than downs. However, there was also a gale force wind to contend with, in the face going up the valley and as expected not really on the back when coming down the valley from 8 miles (strange how that always seems to happen).
20th running of this race and a special memento of medal and water bottle for all finishers. There was, as usual, a grand tea provided as well as excellent array of prizes for all age groups.
Relays - As road captain I am fully aware that we didn't make much of an effort last year with road relays such as the six & twelve stage, Signals and Elswick etc. This is something we should put right this year and get DCH orange vest back on show. As we no longer have a notice board at MC I will be publishing details of these relays on this forum when dates and venues become available so please keep an eye out. Also, as we don't have access at MC can you please speak to your running groups, and the many new runners who have joined recently and encourage all those who don't have access to the forum to sign up and get online. This is the only way we are going to get our message out to all runners and get full teams out for these events. Graham Hunt and Bryan Makay will also be helping out with these events and promoting to some of the younger groups.

Last night I ran in the first Jimmy Bell Newburn River Run and stayed on for a very special race night which Harry Matthews and Elswick harriers had organised in memory of Jimmy Bell who recently passed away. Elswick have re-named this race in memory of a very well respected and decent man who will be missed by his family, who attended last night and many local runners who knew him. Harry Matthews spoke at length after the race of his friendship and long running relationship with Jimmy. Harry gave an account of Jimmy's achievements for Elswick over the past twenty years and highlighted some of his fantastic results as a vet. Most of you reading this will have known Jimmy, as he was a regular runner in the harrier league, road races and relay events. I first met Jimmy at the Morpeth to Necastle many years ago and found him very approachable and always willing to give advice and support regardles of which club you ran for. If you have time you should look up Jimmy's results over the past twenty years as a vet and look at the times he ran for all distances from track to marathons, fantastic.

Just returned from sunny teesideB)- (must have been a good day coz you could see the end of the street) having completed the Redcar half marathon. Good condition but a pretty boring course - straight out and back. Went with Andy and Rob and looking at the forecast though we were in for another Blaydon but turned out not so bad. In fact it was rather pleasent with light rain, fairly warm, no wind and no pigeons. There was the usual Africans at the start (£1K brings them out)::o and some decent local runners. Pace was fast from the off but quickly settled down in the following pack (one-or-two clever lads went with the pace up front but soon paid the price). Ran a good even pace to the turn in ninth and managed to keep it going until eleven but Blaydon still in the old leggs caught up with me therefore had to ease off a little for the last two miles. Happy to hold on to ninth to finish in just under 72 min. Both Rob and Andy also had good runs - well done lads.

Results:
(IC - 9th - 1.11.54),(Rob - 153rd - 1.33.15), (Andy - 177th - 1.34.34), M Kenyon - 420th - 1.43.51), (S Brown - 510th - 1.47.24)

On a grotty night which started by being Sh@t on by a pigeon at Newcastle (some say good luck!) The plan was to get an even pace, running with Dan. I think we set off a tad quick for me anyway I finished up with 38.31 which is a PB for me and a faster average than I've ever ran in distances over 5 km, hence the involuntary "chucking up" reflex going over the flyover before turning into Blaydon High Street. Talking to Harriers after and there was a good turn out, everyone seemed pleased with their run. I think a few of us less experienced "racers" are more encouraged by the experience of Blaydon. Well done everyone.

Don't know what it is about Edinburgh in May but it seems to be able to provide sauna like conditions for marathons. Last year it was hot but there was a slight breeze, this year it was baking and not a sign of the slightest stirring of air even along the coast. Ran the first 16 miles at round about 3:30 pace then decided enough was enough. I've got more marathons later this year and was never going to break any records so slowed down and ran/walked the last 10 miles. Still seemed to pass tons of people in the past few miles as they were wilting in the heat. Finished in 3:47:18 which wasn't exactly bad considering the style that I ran it. May go back again next year as it should be a very quick course but will need it to be cooler.

The results of the time trial are attached - a fantastic turnout and thanks to Gemma and Jon for timing. As chief rules and scores keeper I have published the times and handicap rankings from tonight.

I promsie to help with timing at a future event - if we spread it around then we all get a chance to compete. It really is quite easy, and I will happily do the handicap and points maths offline.

Ted posted the fastest time tonight.

The event tends to be won by the runner who improves most over the course of the summer I do note a couple of names (messr's Knight and Watson) rather closer to the slow end than their winter form suggested... Hmm!:S Can I just remind everyone that running slowly deliberately at the beginning of the summer season is not entirely in the spirit of the competition. I shall for now leave things as they are, but if anyone would like to volunteer an upward adjustment to their handicap I will consider processing it....

Felt much better than i did last year on the way down the hill and knocked 42 seconds off last years time but disappointed i failed to go under 40 mins and just 9 seconds off third M50.I enjoy this day out so will probably do it again next year. Well done Kevin on your prize.

This is a great race and on Sunday it was just about perfect with pleasant sunshine and a cool breeze to stop it getting too warm. A couple of muddy sections but a nice mix of trail, heather path and the odd bit of road. If you haven't done it before it is 12.5 miles starting from Guisborough and taking in Captain Cook's Monument, Roseberry Topping and High Cliff Nab. The winner came home in sub 1.20 but he probably didn't enjoy the stunning views as much as I did in my 1.57. The last couple of times I've done it there haven't been any other harriers there so if you fancy getting off the roads put it in your diary for next year. There's a real sense of achievement when you look back at the Cleveland Hills on the way home.

Thought I would give this another go having been successful last year so went down to Gipsys Green on Sunday morning and entered on the day. Canny day again with a stiff breeze heading out. The course was slightly different due to a cliff fall, therefore a diversion was in place adding about an extra 200m to the 10K. There was also sand covering the main road at the start and finish which made for an interesting first 200m. (probably why they call it the sand dancer)8-) Set off easy behind the leading group of five and sat there until the end of the first lap when I managed to easy my way to the front and opened up a gap of about 50m going thru 3 mile. Managed to increase this over the next 2 mile and pushed on to the finish in the stadium (33:24) followed by Rob in third (33:55). Bill McNeil also ran and won the V80.

Now I know most of you would consider marathons far enough and wouldn't consider going any further but if you are ever tempted I'd recommend this race as a great place to start. 33 miles along the Deeside Way in Aberdeen on an out and back course of a mixture of tarmac, trail and a bit of mud chucked in. There was great support along the route with 3 checkpoints to pick up drinks that you'd left or jam sandwiches at halfway. It was the first time this race was run, part of the new SUMS competition in Scotland. I went through 26.2 miles in 3:51, obviously not running at marathon pace as I had another 7 miles to go, so looking promising for London, just need to rest up till then.
