Sedgefield Harriers are keen to organise a Network (Ch-le-St vs Derwentside vs DCH vs Sedgefield) 5k and 3k competition in a midweek Wed in August. They would like to know if there is any interest. Events would be sen/vet mens 5k, sen/vet womens 5k, u17 men's 3k and u17 women's 3k. Aim is to encourage road/cross country runners onto the track to try it out in a fun competition. There would be an overall team competition with points for each event.

Any interest?

As in previous years, the Club 10 Mile Championship is being held in conjunction with Tynedale Harriers' Jelly Tea road race. The race starts at 11.00 on Sunday 6th September, beginning in Hexham and finishing at Ovingham. There is bus transport between the two points for anyone who can't be dropped off at the start and collected at the finish. As well as the club 10 mile championships, the race also plays host to the NECAA 10 mile championships and the VAANE 10 mile championships, so there's extra incentive for anyone who may do well in those categories / competitions.

One change from previous years is that the club is now recognizing the achievements of competitors from a wider range of ages groups and both genders. As such the club will be presenting awards in the following categories:
Senior Female (up to 39)
Senior Male (up to 39)
Veteran Female (40+)
Veteran Male (40-59)
V60 Male (60+)

Entry is a very reasonable £8, with an extra £2 for bus link.
Please not that there are no online entries, there are no entries on the day, and postal entries close on 24th August, so if you want that free Jelly Tea, yo need to get your entry posted off ASAP.
Entry forms are available from Tynedale Harriers website, and are available from the notice board at Maiden Castle.

The Northern Athletics 6-stage (men) and 4-stage (women) road relays have been scheduled for Saturday 26th September, to take place at Leeds University.

Building on our success from last year, where we managed to get a men's team out at Hartlepool, we are aiming even higher for 2009 and our ambition is to have at least two men's teams as well as at least one women's team, with the ultimate aim of qualifying for the National Road Relays in October.
By having more than one men's team, it provides the opportunity for runners new to this type of competition to 'have a go' without the added pressure of trying to qualify for the Nationals. I've only taken part in one myself, but it's a great event, with a good team spirit. If you're not sure what it's all about, it involves each team racing around a road circuit, with each team's no.1 runners setting off first, then passing over to no.2 runner on completion of their leg, then to no.3 etc, with the finishing time taken when no.6 runner finishes.

Ian Crampton will be putting up a signing-up sheet on the notice board, so if you are up for it either sign-up on the sheet, post a reply on here, or contact myself or Ian directly. If you want to have a go, but would prefer to take part as a member of the 'B' team, feel free to state that, otherwise the team managers will decide.

To make the race more accessible, the club are looking into the feasibility (and cost) of providing subsidised coach transport, so it would be helpful to get an idea of potential numbers sooner rather than later, then we can formalise the arrangements and publicise them. (Obviously runners would not be obliged to travel on the 'team coach').

Durham City Harriers have the ability to put on a great team performance and qualify for the Nationals, so please support your club on 26th September.

As an added incentive, and in an attempt to improve participation and be more inclusive, the club will be formally recognising the achievements of DCH competitors at this race distance for the first time.
I don't know if the club 10k championship is at Darlington again this year, but either way the entry forms for the Darlington 10k are now available on ukresults.net and at Barry Cornelius. Online entries are also available.
The race is at 10.30 on Sunday August 9th.

Good luck to whoever wins, i hope they get to see more of the senior mens trophy than i have, having won it in 2006 at Auckland Castle and again in 2007 at Darlington, i have yet to clap eyes on the trophy. Not that i'm bitter about it...;)

If anyone is after a free 5k timed run on a Saturday morning, you can do no better than pop down to Middlesbrough's Albert Park. I know it's not exactly on the doorstep, but it's free, what more do you want?:S

It is well marshalled, run over 2.5 loops inside the park, uses the wide paths around the perimeter, starts at 9.00, and you get the results published online same day. I did my first one a few weeks ago and i can highly recommend it. They encourage runners of all abilities, and there were a record 99 runners when i did it, so no huge crowds to contend with. The runners have use of the visitor centre / cafe, so there are toilets (no changing rroms) and somewhere for a cuppa / chat afterwards. Alternatively you can go feed the ducks. Or play on the slides.(:D

Check out the website Parkrun.com and then click on Middlesbrough, Albert Park.

Warm up races for London Marathon (4 replies)

The Clartyman today suggested (a good suggestion) that I need a warm up race for London, to test my fitness and therefore to set my pacing right on 26th April (assuming of course that I have enough miles in the tank to cope with the distance.

In the absence of find a half marathon or flat 10 mile race. the Clartyman's suggestion was the Sanddancer 10k on Sunday 5th April. However, give that the last Harrier league is on 28th March, my last opiton for a really lonf run is on the weekend 4th/5th April.

I'm therefore thinking about the Mermaid 10k on Friday 10th (Good Friday) - it's only 16 days before the marathon, but then again it's only 10k.

What thoughts does anyone else have on the wisdon of racing 10k so close to the marathon? (Come on Mr Abbotts - I'm sure you have some wisdom to share!) I have traditionally worked no the principle that it takes 1 day for every long run or race mile I run to get of of my system during a tapering period, i.e. I will not run beyond 21 miles three weeks before, 14 miles two weeks before or 7 ( to 8) miles the weekend before.

The entry form for this race is now available on the excellent barrycornelius.com website.
It's a nice flat out-and-back course (similar to last years 6-stage course), but at £8 is a bit pricey. It's good for a 5 mile PB (:D, especially as there aren't many 5 mile races in the area.
Race HQ is at the 'Historic Quay' and it starts at 10.30 on Sunday 5th April, which is the first weekend of the school easter holidays.
Prizes (unspecified) for 1st 5 males and 5 females, then 1st o40, o45, o50, o55, o60, o65, o70, o80 men, 1st o35, o40, o45, o50, o55, o60, o65 women.
1 team prize, 1st 3 to count.
Anyone up for it?
