It was good to see a good clumb of orange vests at the Wentworth Leisure Centre beforehand -

1st Darren Purvis (Birtley) - 54.02

7th Graham Hunt - 57.14
65th Richard Asquith - 1.07.29
69th Rob Garbutt - 1.08.00
89th David King - 1.09.50
97th Olivia Tindale - 1.10.34
134th Chris Herkes - 1.13.32
136th Simon Hackett - 1.13.38
137th Gary Coulter - 1.13.38
158th Anna Seeley - 1.14.52
197th Craig Herkes - 1.17.00
258th Kelly Zaremba - 1.21.47

529 Melanie Richardson - 2.04.40

5th in the Women's Teams - Durham City (Olivia, Anna and Kelly)

for some reason Simon isn't on the results list I have seen but he definitley came in with or close to Gary.
Alan Rowell picked up an injury about 6 miles I think and again he isn't in the results list but he was definitley at the end.

www.race-results.co.uk/results/2010/tynedale10.pdf

All in all very quick times. There always seemed to be an orange vest along the road somewhere to focus on.
I was aiming to be under 1.20 and would've liked 1.15 so I was chuffed to find out I had a 1.13 in me. It is a good course but I now know what they mean when they say undulating, if you're not going up then you're going down!
A little bit of sunshine for the first 3 miles and a bit of a head wind at times but nothing that caused too much of a nuisance. And pretty impressive refreshments at the end as well.

Well done all

Welcome to Autumn everyone (Sept 1st is officially Autumn apparently). I hope you are now ready for the mud and fun of the soon to be upon us cross country season.
Fixtures for the 2010 Harrier League can be found in the Cross Country section and I know your new cross country captains, Andy and Geoff, are expecting a good turnout at ALL events, so that we can achieve promotion to Div 1 where we rightly belong.
This month we will soon have to start getting back to running around the streets again in the darkness. as the light is beginning to fade at about 8ish, so enjoy the remaining joys of running whilst being able view the beautiful surroundings.

For your continued enjoyment8-) please find September sessions below.

Senior/Vets Newsletter (1 reply)

I’ve had a chat with Dave Masterman and we’ve both agreed to work on getting out a new newsletter which will be aimed at the Senior and Vets Road and Cross Country members. In effect it will be a relaunch of the ‘Orange Vest’ with the same aim of keeping members up to date on what is happening in this part of the club. It will run in tandem with the forum but with a more reflective approach. Dave Masterman will be in charge of the technical side and I’ll be the one to try and gather the content and articles to go into it. We’ll aim for the newsletter to come out at the end of each month (email and hard copy) so there will be a deadline of 20th of the month to get the articles/news whatever to me at gdcoulter@supanet.com or by hand (or even word of mouth!). When you send me something can you mark your email ‘newsletter’.
The sort of ‘copy we’d like is pretty straightforward such as
•	Race reports (maybe with the odd photo). Perhaps it’s a race only you did and you would like to tell others about. If it’s a race that many club members completed then agree who is going to send in the write up.
•	Could you review in advance a race coming up in the next couple of months for the benefit of people who haven’t done it before?
•	News/important notices about Cross Country and Road Races (I’ll be in contact with the captains for this)-but there will be a slot available each month.
•	Advance notice about any training programmes for the month ahead.
• News/results to do with the ‘Winter Handicap’.
•	Any ‘news’ about anything to do with running. Maybe you’ve read a good running book and would like to review it, or been to an event, seen a film (what did you think of Run Fatboy Run?- rubbish/brilliant?), got some new kit, whatever. Maybe you write running poetry....
•	News about upcoming social events
•	?????
If anyone would like to help Dave and me with this that would be terrific. Please email me at the address above or have a word on club nights. A group of dedicated reporters digging up stories or writing copy would be great. Thanks
There will be a questions and answer session following the talk and I was informed that they would be happy for questions an any topic during this session not just those relating to the back and neck area. It is looking like it will take place in October probably after a club night in room/cabin at Maiden Castle, before it is finalised I would like to gauge the level of interest if those interested could post then we will set a date and venue depending on numbers ( minimum of 6 ).

What a great day with brilliant weather. :)Started at the Cumbrian border above Killhope at a couple of minutes after 9 with stunning views both west across Cumbria and east down Weardale. Sheer magic. A couple of pebbles were collected to be passed on along the route, eventually to be thrown into the North Sea. Six of us headed down to Killhope for the first mile and a half, then Ted and Ian took off on the rest of the leg to Stanhope, moving so easily that the support cars had difficulty staying in front! Through the picturesque villages of upper Weardale with views stretching for miles. Rob and Alan took over at the bridge in Stanhope and then to Frosterley and along the Weardale Way to Wolsingham. Through the fields of geese (belligerent but sleeping) and highland cows (docile). Past the railway station, through the village and up and up and up to Tow Law. Well done Rob and Alan, hard men for the hard leg. Meanwhile I was left marooned in Wolsingham looking for the support vehicles which were stuck between Stanhope and Wolsingham behind a serious road accident. Road closed so the two cars had to make a detour towards Consett. Eventually all reunited in Tow Law but not before I had to crawl up the hill to Tow Law which was not in the schedule!

Meanwhile Anth and Jon were tearing down into Waterhouses and along the old railway line to the Stone Bridge. Then through Durham to Rennys Lane where the rest were waiting for the last leg. Ian and Alan heroically running a second leg in the searing heat. 9 of us then set off to Pittington, Hetton and Murton, stopping off at a farm near Murton to get some iced water from a really friendly farm with a dog that was really happy to see us! That doesn't usually happen at farms. Quickly along Murton main street, past Dalton Park where Ted joined us for the last couple of miles. Over the A19 and then into Seaham on a lovely path dropping gently downhill past the golf course, with the blue sea glinting in the distance ahead of us.

Onto the beach and then a paddle and swim (it was that warm!). The stones from Killhope were hurled into the sea and then food and drink for all with a great spread supplied by Jon. Ian made a brew, a great end to a memorable day. Thanks to all who ran (that's Ian,Ted,Alan,Rob,Anth,Jon, Chris C Chris H,Craig H,Bob,Alan J,Stephen), provided support and made this happen-especially Alan R for saying let's do it and Bob for support driving . Suggestions for next year welcome.
I'll put some photos up when I get the chance. We'll release the DVD eventually.

Summarised below.
Positions are across the line and not the chip time position
though the times are the chip time.

1 32:02 Dan Garbutt - 1ST MALE
6 32:57 Ian Crampton (v40) - 1ST V45 1st team too
12 34:06 Graham Hunt
20 35:25 Rosie Smith - 1ST FEMALE
62 39:02 Richard Asquith
118 40:53 Rob Garbutt (V45)
126 41:06 Alan Rowell (V60) - 2ND V60
141 41:46 Anthony Hunt (V40) - PB
147 41:44 John Nash (V?)
171 42:45 Gary Coulter (V55) - 6TH V55
178 42:47 Clare Manser
224 44:11 Elwyn Baldwin (V60) - 4th V60
242 44:20 Ian Marshall (V45)
409 48:51 Peter Chapman
475 50:26 Diane Wood (v45 Ladies) - 8TH Ladies V45
618 53:51 Joseph Harker (V70) - 4th V70

I enjoyed it, I think. A PB for me (25 seconds) which I was personally happy with, but there were some seriously good performances from many others. Good to see Elwyn and Ian Marshall back racing and unlucky to Graham who loses his club championship by posting a better time than last year!
There are a few photos on my photopage, see links below. Best to view by slideshow, or click on an image and view full size by clicking on the button above the photo in the righthand pane, this opens another window and you can then click to zoom in and see the grimaces a lot clearer.

August Endurance Sessions
It's holiday time.
HOORAY!
Of course, if you have been away you will have continued to train and if you are preparing to holiday then some hard sessions before you go will be just what you need.
Enjoy.

Tuesday 3rd August

Track - Warm up then pyramid session. 200,400,600.800,1000, 800,600,400,200.
Split into groups, then choose the pace your group are going to go.
Try to nominate a different person to lead each rep, or alternate laps on longer ones.
You are in the correct group if you can run each rep and not drop off the group. If it is too easy you need to move up next time
Recovery 200m for 200, 400, 600 and 400 for 800, 1000.
Warm down.

Thursday 5th August

Jog out through Shincliffe, then on Bowburn road turn right onto Croxdale Estate Road, then from here 5 x 2.5 min easy/slow. From Sunderland Bridge up to Cock of Nth( as was) and back down to New Inn and MC.
Start speed efforts when suitably warmed up.
Long route, but more miles are good for you (honestly).

Tuesday 10th August

THE HANDICAP

Thursday 12th August

Hard run tonight, so easy warm up to Duke of Wellington via New Inn.
Then pick up pace for good paced run- DoW/Lowes Barn Bank/left to Langley Moor and then left into Littleburn Indutrial Estate/right before bridge/right at end of road then left going past what was Mackays Carpets/ right at end of road and up to traffic lights at Brandon/right and back to Lowes Burn Bank and DoW. Easy jog back to MC.
As this is a sustained run at good pace make sure you choose your group wisely.

Tuesday 17th August

Track - 2 sets of 5 x400m @ your 5 k pace with 200 jog rec between each and 400 jog rec between each set.
Good warm up and down.

Thursday 19th August

Warm up to St Margaret's Traffic lights, then steady/good pace in pairs/groups.
Crossgate Peth to Nevilles X/ right to Whitesmocks/ Salutation and straight on till just before Bek Rd turn right between houses/ across field to join footpath behind police headquarters/pass DLI museum/ Millburngate and all regroup at underpass.
Jog back to MC.

Tuesday 24rd August

We will be joining Brian's group for tonight session. (We have been invited) Don't worry, there all abilities in his group.

Thursday 26th April

Your favourite (again)
Good warm up, then10 x Trod hill.
Good warm down.

50 miles of rocks, bogs, streams with 9658ft ascent with a 24hr cut off time. Should have really made time to recce this as running in the clag with a headtorch while map reading isn't the easiest task in the world. Fantastically organised event with great atmosphere and what would have been wonderful scenery if the weather had just been a little kinder to us.
1st Andrew James 7:46

11th Sarah Rowell 9:58

192nd Anna Seeley 16:48

276th Kelly Nevins 23:13

Managed to get lost with 1/2 mile to go, as the clag had come down properly, and took 40 mins to get back on track so think I need to give it another go next year to put it right. Anyone who is looking for a real challenge of endurance should consider this.

Many thanks to all who have said they'll give this event a go. Real enthusiasm here! :)Just to give you an idea of where we are at the moment.
Date-Sunday August 22nd
From the Cumbrian border above Killhope to Seaham.(50 miles appx). All the way across beautiful Durham.
So far the team consists of (some final confirmations from the following still to come in) Alan Rowell, Anth, Alan Jackson, Chris Callan, Ian Crampton, Rob Hand, Ted Tait, Kevin Knight, Bob Hewitson, Rob Garbutt, Dan Garbutt, Chris Herkes, Gary Coulter, Andy Billett.

We'll get the length of the running legs sorted next and how this fits in with transport arrangements and then we need to put together the groups and agree who runs which legs. Bob and myself(+anyone else interested) will do a survey of the route soon.

Rob G has pointed out that there is a race at Billingham that day so if you're doing the relay don't double book.

Any suggestions always welcome. If anyone else wants to participate please let me know.
